What's the Big
Deal - Kids will be Kids
March 10 at 9 AM, Langley HS Auditorium
On March 10 at 9:00am in
the LHS Auditorium, the Family Network committee will present a
program entitled, What's the big deal-kids will be kids. Recent
research indicates that even occasional binge drinking can have a
lasting effect on a teen's brain. In fact, a comparison between
teens who binge drink (even just twice a month) and those who do not
shows a 10% difference in thinking and memory test--in school, that
could be the difference between one letter grade or another. Our
guest speakers will discuss how alcohol use really does affect teens
differently than adults, and how "pre-gaming" has changed in recent
years. In the most recent FXCo. Youth Survey, McLean area high
schools had some of the highest rates of alcohol use and binge
drinking in the County; come learn what that means for our kids and
why teen drinking really is a big deal.
We look forward to seeing you
at the program.

Update on FCPS 2011 Budget
The Fairfax County School Board voted to adopt the Fairfax County
Public Schools (FCPS) FY 2011 advertised budget of $2.3 billion,
restoring some programs previously identified for elimination in the
proposed budget. Restoration of these programs depends on whether or
not FCPS receives adequate funding from the Fairfax County Board of
Supervisors and the state.
Details
Tune In: FCPS Superintendent Jack Dale
will be a guest on the Kojo Nnamdi show on National Public Radio
station WAMU (FM 88.5) on March 4 from noon to 1 p.m. to discuss the
FY 2011 budget.
No doubt, projected budget
cuts will have enormous impact on our students and staff. What can
we do?

Teaching Your Teen
to Drive - Family Network Program
on March 2nd at 7 PM in Yorktown HS Room 1B
A 16-year-old is 12 times more likely to die in a motor
vehicle crash than his or her parents. Fifty-eight percent of new
teenage drivers will be involved in a car accident within a year of
getting their license, and a significant portion of these crashes
will be fatal.
The good news is that research has shown that car crashes can be
reduced by up to 30 percent when you, the parent, are actively
involved in your teen's instruction and set certain limits. Don't
leave this important skill to chance. Author Phil Berardelli, a
journalist, former teacher and father of two, offers common sense
advice for parents teaching this lifesaving skill, and he addresses
teens with refreshing candor.
Phil Berardelli's book, Safe Young Drivers: A Guide for
Parents and Teens, will be available for purchase both before and
after the presentation. The price is $15.
This Arlington Family Network event is free and open to the
public. Family Network programs are organized by Arlington Public
School PTAs to help parents share resources on guiding teens to
adulthood. See

Update on FCPS 2011 Budget
On January 7, School Superintendent Jack Dale released the
proposed FY 2011 FCPS school budget. The attached press release
gives an overview of the proposed cuts and increases in fees - most
of which were in the “straw man” budget released in November 2009.
http://commweb.fcps.edu/newsreleases/newsrelease_print.cfm?newsid=1332
Of note, the proposed budget includes a request for an
increase of $57.8 million in the county transfer to preserve
all-day Kindergarten, elementary band and strings, elementary
foreign language immersion, and to avoid further increases in class
size (above the class increase size of one student already in the
proposed budget). If the Board of Supervisors (BOS) does not
agree to this request, these programs are also at risk.
Even if the BOS agrees to the $57.8 million increase – and
that’s a BIG “IF” - the proposed budget still includes major cuts to
programs as well as increases in fees. Of particular interest to
our McLean High School community: no general education summer
school (which could affect graduation rates); no freshman sports,
winter track and winter cheerleading, 50% reduction in swim and dive
team practices; class size increase of one student; $100 fee per
student/per sport; $75 fee/ AP test; and no salary increase for a
second year in a row.
No doubt, these
cuts will have enormous impact on our students and staff. What can
we do?

Food Pantry Assistance
Request for Donations and
Information for Families in Need
As you know,
these are difficult economic times for many in our area and nation.
But did you know that over 1,000 school-age children in FCPS
are homeless or living in shelters, including some right here at
McLean? In addition to the homeless, there are many families in
need of food assistance.
To assist
these families, McLean High School has started a food pantry located
in our school in Room 138. Donations of non-perishable food items
and other goods can be dropped off at the main office, or placed in
one of the collection bins. The food pantry is a coordinated effort
of many at our school – including our school psychologist, Debra
Tucker, our school social worker, Marly Jerome-Featherson, Emily
Castro, one of our special education instructional assistants, and
the school administration. The PTSA, along with the SGA and other
community members, have worked closely to make this need into a
reality. A special thanks is extended to Mark Thompson’s Work Study
students, who are assisting with taking inventory and stocking the
shelves, and Jesse Frederick, a 10th grade student who
actually built the shelving needed to stock our pantry.
At its October
meeting, the PTSA membership voted to add a Food Pantry Assistance
line item to the budget. If you would like to help with this effort,
please donate grocery gift cards, (i.e., Giant or Safeway cards in
any denomination) or checks made payable to McLean HS PTSA; note
“Food Pantry” in the memo line. Please enclose either the
grocery cards or checks in a sealed envelope to the attention of
“PTSA Food Pantry Assistance” and deliver these to the main office
at the school. The grocery cards will then be distributed to needy
families as determined by our special services team. Families may
arrange to visit the food pantry by contacting their child’s school
counselor.

Information on FCPS Budget Cuts Affecting Sports
McLean Booster Presidents Cyndee Cannon and Jennifer
Bargerstock attended the Area Wide Booster Presidents Meeting on
January 19, 2010, and gathered the following information.
Last night Booster Presidents and Representatives from 25
Fairfax County High Schools met to discuss the proposed Budget Cuts
and “Athletics Tax” being levied as an income generator for the
Fairfax County General Fund. While the Cuts to the Athletic Program
(notably the end of Freshman Sports in Fairfax) and the proposed
Athlete’s Tax was at the forefront of the discussion, the general
consensus of the group was that the further cutting of service in
Fairfax County Schools is not only detrimental in the short term to
our Students, but in the long term also. Concerns about Students not
having activities to enhance the education process, thus leaving
Students unoccupied in the critical 2:30-7pm hours, will have
county-wide impacts. Concerns were expressed about Truancy, Petty
Crime, Drop in Attendance and GPA’s county-wide, and the overall
reduction in property values as we lose valuable citizens and new
community members to adjacent school systems that offer the benefits
Fairfax County is proposing to cut. A Band-Aid is needed immediately
to stop the bleeding of our important programs; long term efforts
are necessary to shape the future of our wonderful county through
Reform at the State Level.
How can you help right now?
Plan to attend the School Board Meeting on January 27th from
8-9 pm (Please arrive VERY EARLY as parking will be at a premium)
dressed in your School Colors, Team Jerseys or RED to signify the
BLEEDING these cuts are causing our community. Location: Jackson
Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church, VA 22042
There will be more avenues in which to help coming in the
very near future. A website is being developed, and you can join the
Yahoo! Group now at

Where: Meet at 8:45am at Visitor's
entrance to the State Capitol at 10th and Bank streets. Public pay
parking available at 8th & Grace and 7th &

Citizen lobbyists will be home by 4pm
Why: Gov.
Kaine proposed, and Gov. McDonnell may support, freezing the Local
Composite Index (LCI) by which school divisions receive state
education funds. The LCI was designed to be automatically indexed
every 2 years to account for changes in local governments' ability
to pay education expenses. Northern VA schools will lose due to LCI
freeze:

Loudoun |
Prince Wm |
Other NoVA |
Total NoVA |
|
-$61M |
-$34M |
-$23M |

If these school districts lose money, economic development in NoVa
suffers, and then the rest of state suffers. All of Virginia needs
our schools to remain among the best in the nation.

FCPS 2011 Budget Issue
It seems like every day in the Washington Post,
there is another article about next year’s school budget, which is
projected to have a $176 million deficit. Various parent advocacy
groups are being created to help save programs like elementary
school foreign language and band and strings. But before we can
save any individual program, the overall funding issue must be
addressed. In an effort to keep our membership informed, we are
providing the following:
1)
“Straw man” list of potential cuts from FCPS website
(Updated 12/3/2009)
2) FCPS
Budget Information document, compiled from various FCPS and
County budget presentations, and which also includes a call to
action. (Please feel free to contact other elected officials at the
federal, state and local level.)
3) Editorial
in the Fairfax Times from Mark Glaser, president of the
Fairfax County Federation of Teachers
4) Comparison
of Tax Rates document, compiled by Greg Brandon and Kristin
Cabral, President and Vice President (respectively) of Chesterbrook
PTA. This document compares neighboring states’ local taxes, real
estate taxes, state taxes and cigarette taxes. One interesting
point made by Kristin in a recent e-mail was: “the state corporate
income tax at 6% has not been raised since 1972. What has happened
to our schools, roads and services since then?”
The PTAs in the McLean/Langley pyramid are working together
to come up with a coordinated message and plan of action, and we
will continue to keep you updated. In the meantime, please take
time to contact your county, state and federal elected
representatives on this important funding issue for our schools.
Beach Week:
Understanding the Reality
Are you a high school student who is thinking about going
to “beach week” after graduation? Are you a parent or guardian
whose child who is thinking about going to “beach week?” Are you
uncertain about the benefits, risks, or possible consequences of
such an experience? Are you wondering what kind of alternatives to
the beach week experience there might be?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then this
Family Network session is for you. The general public, including
parents and students, are invited to a panelist session on
Wednesday, January 20, 7-8:30 PM in the Little Theater in
Washington-Lee High School, 1301 N. Stafford Street, Arlington, VA.
For questions, please contact Bill Browning, 703-276-9846 (browning@gmail.com).
Panelists will include:
-
Fran O’Brien—is a senior assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney
for Arlington County. Her office prosecutes misdemeanor and
felony criminal violations against both adults and juveniles in
Arlington County and the City of Falls Church. Fran was a
prosecutor in Maryland as well as a defense attorney in the
District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia before joining the
Arlington Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. She is the parent
of a high school senior at Bishop O'Connell and two other
children, ages 21 and 15.
-
Nancy Pilchen—is the current president of the
Washington-Lee High School PTA. She is the parent of a
Washington-Lee sophomore, and two other children, ages 19 and
23. One child participated in an abbreviated beach week and one
participated in an alternative beach week.
-
Michael Nolan—is the parent of a Washington-Lee senior, and
one other child, age 20. His older child participated in “beach
week.”
Drowsy Teen Driving Video
Please take a few minutes to watch this NBC special report
on the danger of drowsy teen driving and share it with
neighbors.
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/32774371#32774371
Key
points covered in the Today Show investigation include:
·
Fatigue
is a factor in 100,000 car crashes every year; with one half
of these crashes involving drivers under 25.
·
36% teens
report driving drowsy on a regular basis.
·
Changes
in the circadian rhythm that occur during adolescence make
it nearly impossible for teens to fall asleep before 11PM.
·
Teens
need 8.5 to 9 hours of sleep; but they average only 6 hours.
· The
combination of early school start times, after-school
activities and late-night socializing results in chronically
sleep-deprived teens.
·
Students
at high schools that start later DO sleep longer.
Changing
high school start times to later in the morning would help
achieve these FCPS goals:
·
To
provide “a safe and healthful learning environment” (FCPS
Strategic Goal 6.7).
·
To help
students “achieve their full academic potential in the core
disciplines (Student Achievement Goal 1.1).
·
To help
students “make healthy and safe choices” (Student
Achievement Goal 2.8).
For more information on the National Sleep Foundation’s third
annual Drowsy Driver Week™, campaign, visit
www.sleepfoundation.org.
SLEEP’s mission is alive and well. They will continue to
call on the School Board and Administration to collaborate
with the community in coming up with a bell schedule that
best serves the health and academic needs of all of our
students. Neighboring counties have found a way to do this
while maintaining competitive school sports and
extra-curricular activities for children of all ages.
Fairfax can, too. Visit
www.SLEEPinFairfax.org for more information, updates
and to sign the petition.

Langley HS PTSA Presents
Understanding and Motivating the
Teenage Brain
If you missed Dr. Stixrud's
lecture at McLean High last spring, please consider attending it at
Langley High School's cafeteria on January 14, 2010, 9:30-11:00 A.
M. It is insightful and highly recommended.
Parents: You knew how much
growth was possible in your young child's brain, how dangerous even
a slight head injury could be. So you read to them to promote
language and reasoning skills. You put bicycle helmets on them to
safeguard from falls. Guess what? Science is learning that a
teenager's brain is just as impressionable--capable of tremendous
growth in performance and dexterity--and just as vulnerable to
permanent damage from risky behaviors. Neuropsychologist William R.
Stixrud will summarize what is now known about the enormous
developmental and biological changes taking place in a teenager's
brain and what you and your student can do to tap into that
potential. Learn how to foster self-motivation, to recognize and
facilitate individual differences in academic achievement, and to
help your teenager develop critical self-regulation patterns for
healthy sleep, study, eating, and stress management before he or she
goes off to the pressures and irregular schedules of college life.
Above all, Dr. Stixrud's tour of the teenage brain will help you
deal with the challenges of the teenage years with humor and
optimism.....
Dr. William Stixrud, Ph.D. and clinical
Neuropsychologist.
Dr. Stixrud is a noted clinical neuropsychologist and
frequent lecturer on brain development. He holds a Ph.D. from the
University of Minnesota and is on the faculty of the Children’s
National Medical Center and George Washington University Medical
School. Join
us and learn!

Are
You Interested in Hosting a French High School Student?
A French high school student is looking for a home where he
can complete the school year as an exchange student. He
signed up with an organization (AYUSA) through which one can
live with an American family as well as take classes in High
School. He was placed in a family in Texas, but it seems
that things aren’t working out with that family. He is
looking for a family who would be willing to take him in and
help him experience the real American Family Way of Life.
The organization is called Ayusa International, and their
website is www.ayusa.org.
According to someone who knows him, Benjamin is a very
serious young man who just graduated from his French High
School with honors. Before he signs up with a University,
he wants to complete a full year of High School in the USA
in order to improve his English. If you are interested in
hosting Benjamin, please contact Nadja Golding at

The PTSA Thanks John Haffey!
The PTSA would like to acknowledge the volunteer efforts of

experts will address these issues and answer your questions.
Wednesday, December 2, 7-8:30 PM in the Little Theater in
Washington-Lee High School, 1301 N. Stafford Street, Arlington, VA.
The general public, including parents and students, are invited.
Panelists will include:

of applying to colleges.

FCPS
Budget FY 2011
At the
October 19th PTSA meeting, School Board member
Jane Strauss gave an update on the preliminary budget
outlook for 2011. In a word, the outlook is grim. Assuming
the county transfer is the same as last year, there will
still be a loss of state funds, leaving a projected deficit
of approximately $176 million. This could result in even
more drastic cuts than last year. Some of the potential
cuts in the preliminary straw man budget are: loss of 1,700
positions; salaries and benefits, textbooks/supplies at all
levels; all summer school programs; all full-day
Kindergarten (except Title I schools); all elementary school
instrumental programs; all elementary school foreign
language programs; eliminate two sports; close one
alternative high school. In addition, the budget could
include increased class size, participation fees for sports,
and fees for AP/IB tests.
It will be important for parents to stay on top of the
situation and provide input to the decision-makers. Please
visit the following website to complete the Budget Feedback
Form
www.fairfaxcounty.gov/survey/fy11suggestions.htm, and/or
plan to attend the Community Dialogue Meetings

Controversies
In Diet and Nutrition: The Myths and Facts
Are you confused about all the conflicting diet and
nutrition advice; concerned about your teenager's health and
diet; or questioning the role of nutritional supplements?
Remember the adages: "An Army marches on its stomach" and
"You are what you eat"? Food is fuel. The right foods keep
us healthy, energetic, and able to pursue our goals. The
wrong foods (which are all too tempting!) can make us sick,
lethargic, and barely able to make it through a day's long
list of activities. This is especially true of teenagers.
Our students' ability to study, to focus in class, to have a
positive attitude and self-image, and to participate in both
the challenges and joys of high school are largely
determined by what they eat.
On
OCTOBER 27TH, 7:30, MCLEAN HIGH AUDITORIUM, hear DANA LAAKE,
RDH, MS, LDN, licensed nutritionist, author, educator and
talk show host, outline a healthy diet and how to achieve
it.
Learn:
·
how foods can affect attention, behavior, and mood ·
how to combat allergies, asthma, "brain fog" or inability to
focus ·
how to optimize nutrition ·
how food affects sports performance ·
about food and chronic diseases ·
about the myths of some foods' benefits ·
about gluten and casein ·
what vitamins and supplements are safe and useful ·
what contributes to hunger and weight gain
Arm your student to be strong, happy, and quick. We
encourage parents, educators, and students to hear this very
informative lecture. Please contact PTSA Health & Wellness
Chair, MaryAnn Lastova, at
last4ever1@verizon.net with any questions.
“Reaching Out” Program on Substance Abuse Monday, October 19,

are invited to hear from local parents whose children have
used illegal substances, a teen who has abused substances,
and treatment professionals about the signs and symptoms of
drug abuse, actions you can take, and resources that are
available. Parents, Greg Lannes, Greg Richter, and Jody
Stokely, who had their wake up call with their own children,
now wish to share their insight with you to help YOU protect
your children. Knowledge is power and it helps with
prevention of substance abuse!

Fairfax County Health Department Town Hall
Meeting - What to Expect this Flu Season – September 1, 7:00
pm
The Fairfax County Health Department will
host a series of town hall meetings throughout the month of
September. These community wide events were organized in
response to the ongoing pandemic to better prepare residents
for the 2009- 2010 flu season. These town hall style
meetings will give residents the opportunity to ask any
flu-related questions they may have.
“I look forward to meeting with residents
to discuss this important topic,” said Gloria Addo-Ayensu,
M.D., M.P.H., Fairfax County Director of Health. “Our goal
is to ensure that residents understand how influenza is
transmitted and what they can do to protect themselves and
others from catching the flu and limit its spread within our
community.”
Dr. Addo-Ayensu will begin each meeting
with a brief presentation before taking questions from the
public. Residents will learn about:
-
2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic
-
Individual and community influenza prevention strategies
-
Seasonal and H1N1 influenza vaccine distribution and
availability
-
Planning and preparing for flu season
