MHS Introduces Chef Tim Ma, Our Partner in
the Chefs
Move to Schools Program

The First Lady called on chefs to get involved in her Chefs Move to Schools program, a part of her broader Let’s Move initiative, by adopting a school and working with teachers, parents, school nutritionists and administrators to help educate children about nutrition in order to reduce childhood obesity and the alarming increase in Type 2 diabetes in children.
Meet Chef Ma, owner of Maple Avenue Restaurant, a Virginia Green certified restaurant that serves food made with locally sourced, and often organic, produce and pastured meat! Chef Ma believes our best nutritional opportunities come from high quality, real food. To that end he has developed relationships with many local famers including Joel Salitan at Polyface, Inc. to supply his restaurant with the best local ingredients available.
MHS first worked with Chef Ma last year. He helped the PTSA provide the wonderful fresh, locally sourced, organic-equivalent teacher appreciation lunch.
One of Chef Ma’s first goals is to work with our new teacher, Mrs. Gore. Mrs. Gore is teaching our Gourmet Foods class and is sponsoring our new Culinary Club. Chef Ma hopes to:
· Spark an interest in the culinary profession
· Teach a respect for ingredients and teach where quality ingredients come from, and
· Promote a return to REAL food and how it’s made.
